Our Coworkers Have Fur and Tails! Welcome to AFB’S Dog-Friendly Workplace

It’s 8 am and Greg and Phillip are beginning their day at AFB International. As they settle into the office and Greg walks to the coffee bar, he sees his coworker who asks if Phillip is here today because she has a treat for him. No, Phillip is not an exceptional employee deserving of special accolades, but he is a welcome addition to the office. Phillip is a 135-pound Bullmastiff and is part of AFB’s Dogs at Work program.

Many more companies are also learning the benefits of a pet-friendly workplace. “A study conducted by Nationwide, in partnership with the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI), revealed that 90 percent of employees in pet friendly workplaces feel highly connected to their company’s mission; fully engaged with their work; and willing to recommend their employer to others. In contrast, less than 65 percent of employees in non-pet friendly workplaces made the same claims. Employees in pet friendly workplaces were also more likely to stay with their company in the future.”

Additionally, a dog-friendly work environment helps attract talent. “I was very excited when I learned AFB was a dog-friendly workplace and that really drew me to the company. Seeing dogs at work every day definitely makes work more fun! We just got a new puppy and I’m looking forward to when she’s old enough to come to work with me,” says Emma Koziel, Customer Engagement Scientist.
